In the splendor of the Apuan Alps

Did you know that striking mountains rise in Forte? To the west, Versilia is defined by the shimmering Tyrrhenian Sea, whereas to the east, by the dramatic peaks of the Apuan Alps! This fascinating mountain range features rugged summits approaching 6,500 feet and a stunning profile reminiscent of the Alpine landscape. The mountainous area that descends from the peaks toward the sea is known as Alta Versilia (Upper Versilia). Here, cooler temperatures, lush greenery, and luxuriant nature can be enjoyed just a short drive from the beaches.

TREKKING IN NATURE

The Apuan Alps offer an extraordinary range of hiking opportunities, from gentle walks to demanding alpine climbs. From Forte dei Marmi, it takes only a few minutes by car to reach the trailheads of numerous paths, ranging from easy to challenging, located primarily in the areas of Seravezza and Stazzema.

APUAN FOOD & WINE

The Apuan Alps are also a treasure trove of culinary traditions and small-scale artisanal producers. In recent years, a modest yet significant network of local winemakers has emerged; heroic vintners and farmers, who cultivate on terraces carved into the hillsides, are reviving ancient local grape varieties.

Among the area’s most celebrated specialties is Lardo di Colonnata, cured in marble basins in the village of Colonnata above Carrara. The region also boasts an impressive variety of cured meats, cheeses, and local plant varieties waiting to be discovered.

VISITING THE MARBLE QUARRIES

The history of Apuan marble, regarded as the world's finest and most coveted, has significantly influenced Forte dei Marmi, even impacting its very name. From the town, visitors can quickly access several stunning marble quarries that welcome guests.

Mount Corchia Quarries

The quarries of Mount Corchia are the highest and most panoramic in Italy and are a familiar sight to anyone who spends time in Forte. Rising directly behind the town, they stand out as a prominent feature of the landscape. Guided visits to the Mount Corchia quarries are organized during the summer months and depart from the village of Levigliani.

Carrara Marble Quarries

Arguably the most famous marble quarries in the world, the Carrara quarries are open to visitors year-round. They can be reached by traveling from Carrara toward the hamlet of Miseglia. Beyond their awe-inspiring scenery, the Carrara quarries offer an open-air museum experience that tells the centuries-old story of marble extraction.
