The Versilia section of the Via Francigena

The Via Francigena is an ancient pilgrimage route, used since well before the year 1000 by travelers from across Europe on their journey to Rome, the seat of the Papacy and the heart of Christianity. Today, this fascinating and panoramic trail remains very much alive. Many people choose to walk it, whether for a short or an extended journey, to experience Italy at a slower, more intimate pace, discovering the country step by step. One of the most scenic and captivating stretches of the Via Francigena runs through Versilia, just a short distance from Forte dei Marmi. This is Stage 26, which connects Massa to Camaiore.

Stretching for approximately 25 kilometers, Stage 26 winds along the hills that frame the Versilia coastline, passing through the town of Pietrasanta and several beautifully preserved historic villages. Compared to other sections of the Via Francigena, this stage is slightly more demanding due to its elevation changes, but that effort is rewarded with breathtaking views, offering spectacular views with panoramic vistas over the entire Versilia coast.

For those staying in Forte dei Marmi, we recommend joining the trail halfway. The route can be conveniently accessed from the small village of Strettoia, just a five-minute drive from Forte, and followed southward toward Camaiore. This shorter itinerary makes the experience suitable for a wider range of walkers while allowing you to enjoy the most scenic and panoramic portion of the stage. Once in Camaiore, you can choose to retrace your steps on foot or take advantage of local public transportation for a short return journey to your starting point.
