He is one of Forte’s best-known and most beloved personalities, and spring is also bursting in his square, Piazza Emilio Barberi. Frigate captain and gold medalist for military valor, Barberi was born in Forte dei Marmi and lived here for most of his life, including his last years. “A man worthy in all respects of the highest heroic traditions of the Italian Navy” recites his decree for the award of the gold medal.

Through Barberi, Forte dei Marmi honors all sailors. The small, central square is the spot where the town celebrates its bond with the sea and pays tribute to all those who, in the past as in the present, have chosen to set out to sea.
