Aldous Huxley in Forte dei Marmi

Discover Forte dei Marmi through the pages of a book

“For to live on this coast, between the sea and the mountains, among alternate flawless calms and shattering sudden storms, is like living inside one of Shelley's poems. One walks through a transparent and phantasmagorical beauty.”

Aldous Huxley, the novelist behind “Those Barren Leaves,” which features the quote above, was among the many European intellectuals who resided in Forte in the early 1900s. This British philosopher and author spent several years in Italy, mastering flawless Italian, and penned some of his initial novels between Florence and Forte.
Known for his dystopian tales, enchanting poems, and adventurous travel narratives, Forte dei Marmi honored Huxley by naming a street after him—a recognition of a remarkable writer to be treasured, both now and in the past.
